Stationary cracks are common in plaster due to the inherent inflexibility of cement. As cement dries, it develops interlinking circular cracks (similar to dried mud in a dam).
Causes:
Natural plaster shrinkage
Water penetration into bricks
Sun drawing moisture to the surface via the cracks

Repair Method:
Identify and seal the water source
Re-texture and undercoat
Apply flexible, weather-resistant paint to prevent reoccurrence

Before modern cement, lime from natural deposits was the binding agent. Water ingress reverses the cement-making process by leaching lime out of the mortar, weakening the structure.
Signs of Water-Related Cracks:
Raised edges or blistering paint
Powdery white residue (efflorescence)
Sand particles beneath paint when peeling

Repair Method:
Locate and stop moisture entry points
Remove damaged plaster
Apply moisture-shedding coatings to prevent streaking

Jacking Cracks
Caused by cyclical expansion and contraction pushing building elements apart
